Etched glass pooja room door

Etched glass doors can be very expensive to buy and if you want a custom design instead of standard ‘stock’ designs they price will be even higher. With a little work you can create your own etched glass door for a fraction of the cost.

I always wanted a Ganesh etched glass door for my pooja room. But I did not want to break my bank for getting a door professionally etched and installed. So came up with this project of etching my own glass door.

Prepare your door

The easiest way to make your etched glass door is to remove the door from the hinges and lay it on a flat surface such as a table top, a work bench or sawhorses.  If you are working on a surface that could be damaged, be sure there is a drop cloth or other protective coating on that surface. The creme used to etch the glass is an acid and can damage wood and other surfaces. Clean the glass you are going to work on and make sure it is free of all dust and lint. Use masking tape to protect the edge where the glass meets the wood.

Materials required:

  • See through glass door
  • Etching cream (amazon etching cream link )
  • Washcloths
  • Water
  • Wall decals of your choice
  • Painters tape
  • Gloves to wear while working on project

I always fascinated about having a Ganesh picture on my pooja room glass door. So, I found one Ganesh wall decal on Amazon.

Steps:

Clean the glass door so that there is no dust on it.

Attach painters tape near the end of the glass in the glass door.

Put the wall decal on your glass door. Press down the decals hard enough and make sure you don’t have any air bubbles so that etch does not leak underneath!

Start applying the etching cream with a paintbrush from one end of the door. You will end up finishing the entire box of etching cream for a very little portion of the door. Apply the cream liberally without any spaces. Here is an example of how you can apply the cream.

Let the cream sit on the area for about 10-15 min or instructed time. Now start scraping the etching cream from the door and save it back to the box. You will be resuing the etching cream again. So don’t throw away the cream.

Once you have the cleared the cream out of the area. Clean the area with water and cloth. You have your glass etched.

Now repeat the same process for the entire door. One box of etching cream could be used for the entire door.

Once you have your entire door etched, clean it well with washcloths dipped in water for several times until you get the cream completely off.

Now remove the wall decal sticker on the door slowly.
