ORC Spring 2021 – Week 5 – Metal Shelving

This week we are kicking off our shelving for our TV wall finally and made some real progress. So for the wall shelving we wanted to do a mix of metal and wood shelving. Getting custom metal shelving could get really expensive if you want to get it fabricated. I figured we could do some metal cutting and make the metal shelving ourselves without having to do any welding and fabrication.

I found this mainstays shelving that we could use and make different shapes from it. As you can see in the below image

  • The first cut highlighted in red gives us a horizontal rectangular box
  • The second cut gives us a large square box
  • And the third cut can be used as a horizontal or a rectangular box.

So one single shelving unit can give us 3 boxes. We had to use 3 mainstays shelving sets for our plan. The metal marked ones is where the walmart metal shelving is going to come and the rest will have wood boxes with fluted backing.

Before we fix the shelving to the wall, we have added 2 plywood sheets in order to give extra support. Since these shelving units may not land on the studs correctly, we have first fixed the plywood against the stud and then screwed the metal shelving to the plywood.

Before we fixed them on the wall we placed everything on the floor and did a dry run of the arrangement. These shelving units are assembled according to the screws given on the set.

We have fixed the plywood sheets to the wall. Now the next step is to fix the shelving to the wall. For the shelving I originally thought of doing gold and painted the shelving with Krylon gold paint. Krylon paints are my top fav spray paints. I use this gold paint for all my traditional frames, ethnic projects and for anything that needs a dab of gold. This gold color has got a subtle matt look and isn’t striking gold unlike other brands. Krylon paints are fast drying and causes no drips while you paint. I just loooovee these paints truly!!

But then I liked black over gold and painted them black again ;). Sometimes things do change last minute and I go with the flow.

Isnt black looking nicer with my wall color.

Once we are done with the painting, we got to fix them to the wall. There are holes with screws given on the unit to fix to the wall, so we have used them to screw the unit.

And this is how it looks!

These are the updates for Week5, the time is running fast and we still have a lot of things to do on my list:

  • Make wood boxes
  • Color them with wall color
  • Fix them to the wall
  • Cut and fix Fluted trim for wood boxes
  • Paint the fluted backing
  • Paint the cabinets and decide the design for the cabinets (This will be on the flow too. I originally thought fluted but should see if it gets overwhelming after I do the wood boxes on the wall)
