Outdoor Couch

As Summer is here and the weather is getting warmer, it’s time to start thinking about our outdoor furniture!Garden furniture can be one of the most expensive elements of a backyard design. They are mostly found either in wicker or the metal frames and they do cost a lot for a nice looking wood furniture set.

It’s not easy to find cool outdoor furniture that fits into your budget. It is easy however, to build these great DIY outdoor garden and patio furniture pieces for your backyard. Not only are these projects easy enough for most beginners, they look high end. Don’t let fear of a power tool or two scare you off, we are here to help you with detailed tutorial that will walk you through the project and can cost you just less than $100.

Things you need for the project:

  1. Wood cut list:
    • 6 ft 2×4 planks for back and base support – 7 qty
    • 2×4 planks cut in the depth of the couch – we had 23 inches -11 qty
    • 30-inch 2×4 plank for the back height of the sofa – 2 qty
    • 24.5-inch 2×4 planks for side handles – 2qty
  2. screws -2 1/2″
  3. Outdoor wood stain
  4. Polyacrylic
  5. wood glue

Have lowes/home depot guys cut the 2×4’s planks to your exact measurements

Step1: Lets prepare the base of the furniture.

Place the 2, 6ft planks vertically and then place the 2 23 inch 2×4’s horizontal as shown. Glue the small planks to the long ones with wood glue and then screw them where the woods meet.

Step2: Add the slats

Now add 3 planks in between the long planks. Follow the same step, glue them and then add screws.

Step3: Making side structures of the furniture.

Place one 23 inch plank ( front handle) and one 30 inch plank ( back height of sofa), vertical, in standing position and then attach them with a 23 inch plank ( this will be the depth of the sofa) at a height of 13 inches ( this will be the seating height of the sofa without cushions) from ground such that it completely covers the 4 inch side of two vertical standing planks. Screw in a 24.5-inch plank on top of the short vertical plank to the long vertical planks. This will be the side handle.

Now attach a 23-inch plank perpendicular under the previously installed plank. Please note that this 23-inch perpendicular plank should be on the internal side of the sofa

Step4: Attaching the side handles to the base of the furniture.

Now simply screw in the base prepared in step 2 to the internal side of perpendicular 23-inch plank installed last in the step above

Step5:

Now to the base, screw long slats(72″) to the base of the furniture to the vertical slats. This will make the structure more sturdy

Add 2 long planks(72″) to the back of the sofa in between the handles using pocket holes.

I added a middle row to the back to help keep cushions in line.

Deck it up with some pillows and there you go with a beautiful couch which is less than 60$
