Rajni’s home is a true DIY treasure. I really love each and every piece that she has curated her place with. She used such vibrant colors and yet brings in that warm look in the space.
All of her pieces are either re-purposed from old furniture or upcycled junk. This beautiful frame wall she has designed from old reclaimed window frames is a showstopper !! Every window adds so much character to the space, and I really love the way she upcycled a door to make this coffee table.
As you can see in her pictures, she has a subtle way of adding Indian touch to the farmhouse style decor. This feature wall is made from rustic wood panels.
I can’t stop admiring her painted furniture pieces, doesn’t this blue (Annie Sloan – Napoleon Blue) wardrobe reminds of of Greece!! Can one believe that the linen cabinet and the bench are upcycled from an old window….WOWWW!!
It might take for me forever to keep showing her DIYs like these. Why not hop on to her Insta handle (@myriad_myhome) and follow her by yourself to enjoy the beauty of her journey through the home. For now, Rajni is here to show her one of the lovely cabinet makeover she did for her dining space.
This cabinet was five years old, not too old but the color and the grains of the teak was always a concern. After serving us for a good 5 years & surviving 3 transfers, it deserved some love & care. And so, I thought of giving it a makeover.
The idea/plan:
Since the background wall was deep magenta, I wanted to give this cabinet a very royal look using deep greens & blues with a touch of antique gold
Things used:
A lot of people asked me where can they get annie sloan chalk paints in India. You can checkout Artynest at hyderabad or you can order them online.
- Amsterdam Green
- Napoleon Blue
- Brush
- Sanding Paper for creating distressed look
- Brass Knobs
Steps/ Implementation:
For this project I choose Chalk Paints by Annie Sloan (Amsterdam Green & Napoleon Blue).
1. I started with cleaning the entire surface with a lint free cloth to remove the dust.
2. Since the surface was not too glossy, I started using paint (mixing green & blue in no particular ratio to achieve the exact colour I wanted) directly, with a flat brush & subsequently used a roller to smoothen the brush marks. This gave a very smooth finish.
3. Immediately, (when the first coat was still wet), I took some Napoleon Blue on brush & highlighted few areas (corners of the cabinet & edges of drawers). This is called wet on wet Technique.
4. Once the first coat had dried, I gave a second coat to the entire cabinet leaving the parts where I had exclusively used Napoleon Blue.
Pardon the unclear image, it was shot from a video on Insta highlights 😛
5. Once the second & final coat was dry, I used Annie Sloan Clear Wax with a round brush to seal my project. The clear wax is water repellent. It emphasizes depth of colour and gives a beautiful finish.
6. Since I planned to give this cabinet a grand look, I decided to change the boring black metal hardware to something more intricate and interesting. So, I chose round brass knobs for drawers & peacock brass knobs of cabinet doors
7. After placing the hardware, I used a lint free cloth to buff the clear wax on the entire surface giving a beautiful sheen to the entire cabinet.
