DIY grand temple door backdrop

After exploring various backdrop designs over the years, this time, I found myself dreaming bigger. I wanted to take on a project that would push the boundaries a bit more. When I discovered that a friend had access to a laser cutter, my idea became more plausible. We set out to create a temple door!

I’ve always been captivated by the beauty of traditional wood-carved doors from the past. There’s an old world charm, a quiet sophistication to the exquisitely carved wood doors, each one a testament to the craftsmanship and skill. With modern tools at my disposal here in the U.S., in true DesiDIY style, I set out to create a DIY temple door for my backdrop—one that would be both a nod to tradition and a personal milestone.

Materials required

Step-by-step instructions

  • We started with a plywood base as the foundation for the door frame.
  • We used 1*2 and 2*4 strips of plywood and arranged them in a square block pattern, gluing the strips securely in place.
  • Once the square pattern was set, we manually distressed the wood by sanding and hammering the door frame.
  • Next, we added various trims to the middle and sides of the door to enhance the overall design.
  • We glued on Dashavataram laser cut-outs around the outer frame of the door, followed by floral cut-outs to add detailing to the frame.
  • We applied a coat of varnish to give the door a worn wood look, adding character and depth.
  • As final touches, we glued on studs, door knockers, and brass accents to add authentic detailing and make the door truly stand out.
