Saree draping for ammavaru

Draping the saree for ammavaru is a time-consuming activity and requires a lot of patience, especially if you are doing it for the first time! After all, it will make or break the entire look. Safe to say, I’ve had many back-breaking moments. Over the years, however, with practice and persistence, I have improved. I must admit, I also receive a lot of help from Praneel.

I draped the saree for my ammavaru last year giving a double pallu look. Here’s how I did it. I hope you find this helpful.

Instructions :

  • Start by pleating the saree and ironing each pleat. Leave a little bit of the saree on each end.
  • Using binder clips, hold all the pleats together.
  • Then fold the saree to 1/3rd the length.
  • Add an underskirt to the readily available ammavaru base. I added the dowels for support.
  • Tie the saree to the doll using a string and secure it strongly.
  • Place the legs over the saree in the position you want.
  • Then take the left end of the saree and drape it around the leg. Secure it using a pin.
  • Repeat the same on the right side. This will need a little adjusting till it sits the way you want.
  • Once you are happy with how the feet and the drape, stitch the legs in place.
  • Now, adjust the top frills and the pleats to make it look nice and evenly spread.
  • Cut a foam board in a half oval shape and place it under the saree using thread.
  • Arrange and adjust each frill and secure them with pins one by one.
  • Add a belt accessory on top to cover the pins.

Here’s a final look of the draping.
