White oak paint finish

After weeks of transforming our master closet , I couldn’t leave our master bath untouched. Despite the temptation to postpone it, I had to do some serious convincing to get Praneel on board with giving the bathroom a makeover it needed. Read on to see how we went from a how we turned a cluttered space into a serene, spa-like bathroom.

We went from this..

to this..

We love the trending oak-stained look wood look, but instead of replacing all the doors, we used a paint hack to achieve the same effect. This helped us upgrade our skills, as well as get a fantastic look all within a budget.

Here’s how to get the same affect:

Materials required :

  • Paint (white or light gray)
  • Wood primer
  • Paintbrushes or rollers
  • Medium-grit sandpaper
  • Clear coat or polyurethane
  • Optional: wood stain or glaze

Process :

  • Prepare the Surface: Sand the wood to smooth out any imperfections.
  • Prime the Wood: Apply a coat of primer to create a strong bond between the wood and paint.
  • Paint the Wood: Apply one or two coats of white or light gray paint, depending on the desired opacity.
  • Distress the Paint (Optional): Use sandpaper to lightly distress the paint, creating a worn look.
  • Add Wood Stain or Glaze (Optional): Apply a small amount of stain or glaze to enhance the wood grain pattern.
  • Seal with Clear Coat or Polyurethane: Apply a clear coat to protect the paint and give it a glossy finish.

To help change up the feel of a space, all small tweaks and updates go a long way in elevating the entire feel and overall aesthetic. We did quite a few and it was worth all the effort!

We removed the existing hardware, cleaned the pipes, drilled additional holes and installed the new faucet. The black faucet adds such a contrast and instantly lifts up the look.

Next, we added peel-and-stick tiles—a quick, inexpensive hack that instantly enhances the space.

We decided to cut up extra wood into blocks and piece them together because, why take the easy route? This idea turned out to be more challenging than it sounded, but it was definitely worth the extra effort. Inexpensive, labor intensive, bespoke feature wall from extra wood 🙂

As this side was shaping up beautifully, we incorporated a simple and quick hack to infuse a spa-like ambiance into the space.

We used up extra slats to add an interesting wall feature to the space above our wall tub.

Adding wall slats is quite easy and you’ve seen me incorporate these throughout my home.

  • Measure the desired length.
  • Apply glue to the slats.
  • Use the hardware to secure them in place.
  • Slide and align the slats on top, continuing the process until complete.

To enhance the simple slats, we added a touch of greenery and decoration, we used a quick hack by adding faux plants to holders. This lifted the space breaking the monotony of the space while still allowing room to add more accents to the holders.

We used Ikea plants, trimmed them to the desired length, and attached the hardware. After taping them in place to finalize the positioning, we secured them with screws and added the glass holder. This created the effect of a floating plants shelf. We loved how this turned out.
