Every year, the backdrop ends up being one of the most important parts of the Ammavaru setup. It’s the first thing people notice, and it plays a big role in drawing attention to Ammavaru, and helps transform an everyday room into something that feels festive, welcoming, and special.
For this setup, the goal was to create a backdrop that felt grand without being overly complicated to build. By layering foam insulation boards, flower panels, decorative garlands, and a few custom-made elements, the backdrop gained both height and depth while still remaining lightweight and easy to assemble.
One of my favorite things about this design is how flexible it is. You can recreate the same look on a larger scale for a big celebration or simplify it for a smaller space. The basic structure stays the same, but the details can easily be customized to suit your home, your style, and the occasion.

How to Create an Ammavaru Backdrop – Step by Step
Step 1: Create the Main Backdrop Structure

Start by attaching your printed backdrop panels to foam boards for added stability. In many of my previous setups, I attached the backdrop directly to the wall using adhesive strips. For this setup, however, I wanted a freestanding design, so we secured the backdrop panels to a backdrop stand instead.
To achieve the height we wanted, we used boxes underneath the backdrop structure to elevate it. This helped create a more balanced look and allowed the backdrop to work seamlessly with the surrounding decorations.
Step 2: Add the Flower Center Panel
Once the main backdrop was in place, we filled the center section with flower backdrop panels.
This instantly added texture, color, and depth while helping break up the large printed backdrop. The flowers also created a beautiful focal point behind Ammavaru.

Step 3: Build the Side Frame Detail

This was one of the new design elements we experimented with for this setup.
Using thin wooden strips, we created a decorative frame shape along the sides of the backdrop. This simple addition helped define the edges and made the backdrop feel much more finished and intentional.
Step 4: Cover the Frame with White Flowers

After creating the frame structure, I wrapped and decorated it using white flower garlands.
The flowers softened the look of the wooden frame and helped tie it into the rest of the floral decorations throughout the setup.
Step 5: Add the Decorative Garlands

Next came the garlands.
We attached the short gold garlands across the top center section and added the longer garlands along both sides. These layers created movement and added a traditional festive feel to the backdrop.
To make the display look fuller, we also added additional flower garlands throughout the center section.
Step 6: Create the Banana Tree and Cow Decorations

To bring in more traditional elements, I created custom banana tree and cow decorations.
The designs were mounted onto foam board, cut out, and then placed throughout the setup as decorative accents. These pieces added personality and helped create a more authentic festive atmosphere.
Step 7: Style the Space with Accessories
Finally, I added faux plants in decorative pots along with gold bird accents.
These finishing touches helped soften the overall design, filled empty spaces, and brought additional dimension to the setup.
Step 8: Styling and Decorating the Backdrop

Once the main backdrop was complete, it was time to add the decorative details that brought the entire setup to life.
To create a more traditional feel, I added a custom banana tree and cow cutouts mounted on foam board. These pieces helped reinforce the theme and added visual interest throughout the display.
To soften the space and make it feel more layered, I incorporated faux plants in decorative pots around the setup. Small gold bird accents were placed among the decor to add a touch of elegance and help tie everything together.
While the backdrop itself creates the foundation, it is often these smaller styling details that make the setup feel complete. Don’t be afraid to experiment with decorative elements that reflect your own style and traditions. Sometimes the simplest additions end up becoming the most memorable part of the display.
Ways to Customize This Backdrop
One of my favorite things about this backdrop design is how easy it is to adapt for different homes, budgets, and celebrations. The basic structure stays the same, but a few simple changes can completely transform the final look.
For Smaller Spaces
If you’re working with a small pooja corner or apartment, consider reducing the width of the foam boards and using fewer decorative elements. Instead of creating a full backdrop wall, focus on a smaller focal point directly behind Ammavaru. A flower panel, a few garlands, and simple side accents can still create a beautiful display without overwhelming the space.
For Larger Pooja Rooms
If you have more room to work with, you can expand the backdrop by adding additional foam boards, larger flower panels, or extra garland layers. You can also extend the decorative elements outward with additional banana trees, floor arrangements, or hanging decorations to create a more immersive setup.
Experiment with Different Flower Colors
While this design uses a classic color palette, you can easily customize the backdrop using flowers that complement your celebration theme. Soft pastels create a more elegant look, while bright yellows, oranges, and reds add a vibrant festive feel. Even changing the flower colors can give the same backdrop a completely different personality.
Add Your Own Decorative Touches
The banana tree and cow decorations worked beautifully for this setup, but there are many ways to personalize the design. Traditional umbrellas, diyas, bells, peacock elements, temple-inspired cutouts, or family heirloom decor pieces can all add a unique touch while keeping the overall design cohesive.
Budget-Friendly Alternatives
If you’re decorating on a budget, consider using printed backdrop panels instead of large flower walls or reducing the number of garlands used throughout the design. Reusing decorative elements from previous celebrations is another great way to create a beautiful setup without purchasing everything new each year.
The best part about this backdrop is that there is no single “right” way to decorate it. Use these ideas as a starting point, then add your own creative touches to make the setup meaningful for your family and celebration.
