If I’m being honest… this space didn’t start out calm and dreamy.
It started with snowed-in days, a lot of back-and-forth, “wait… measure that again,” and honestly… a little chaos.
But somewhere between coffee breaks, dance breaks, and building things again and again… this corner came to life.
And now?
It’s the spot.
The one you don’t want to get up from.

Watch the Full Transformation
How This Space Came Together
What started as a simple wallpaper idea quickly evolved into a full DIY transformation that brought this space to life. It turned into a custom dining bench, a cozy corner perfect for slow mornings, and ceiling panels with the softest, warm glow that completely changed the feel of the room. And honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way. This wasn’t just another home project—it was a hands-on DIY build filled with wood, tools, creative decisions, plenty of opinions, lots of laughter… and yes, absolutely no one escaping my camera along the way.

Materials You’ll Need
Here’s everything we used for this project:
For the Bench
- ½-inch or thicker plywood (for seating)
- Heavy-duty wall brackets
- Screws + wall anchors
- Drill machine
For the Wallpaper Panel
- Wallpaper panel
- Wallpaper adhesive/glue
- Paintbrush (for applying glue)
- Smoothing tool or cloth
For the Canopy Ceiling
- Plywood panels (cut to size)
- Wooden base/support strips (for ceiling frame)
- Screws + drill
- Wood varnish or polish
- LED strip lights
Most of these are beginner-friendly materials—you don’t need anything too fancy.
DIY Wallpaper Panel (Where It All Started)
This simple step is what sparked the entire transformation.
Step 1: Apply Glue to the Wall

Using a paintbrush, apply wallpaper glue directly onto the wall.
Work in sections so the glue doesn’t dry out before you place the panel.
Make sure the layer is even—not too thick, not too thin.
Step 2: Stick the Wallpaper Panel

Carefully place your wallpaper panel onto the glued area.
Start from one side and slowly press it down to avoid air bubbles.
Take your time here—this step is all about patience.
Step 3: Smooth It Out

Use a cloth or smoothing tool to gently press out any bubbles or wrinkles.
Work from the center outward.
Let it set and dry fully before moving on.
At this stage, it already feels like a small win… but little did we know what was coming next.
DIY Dining Bench (Simple + Sturdy Build)
This bench might look custom-built… but it’s actually one of those projects that’s very doable once you break it down.
Step 1: Install the Brackets

Start by marking where your bench will sit on the wall. Take your time here—this step really sets the foundation for everything.
Use a level to make sure your markings are straight. Then drill into the wall and secure your heavy-duty brackets using screws and anchors.
Tip: If you can, try to anchor into studs for extra strength. This makes a big difference in how sturdy your bench feels.
Once installed, give the brackets a little shake test. They should feel solid and unmoving.
Step 2: Measure and Place the Plywood

Now place your plywood sheet on top of the brackets.
This is your moment to double-check everything:
- Is the length right?
- Does it sit evenly?
- Are the edges aligned with your wall?
You might find yourself adjusting… and re-adjusting (we definitely did). That’s normal.
Step 3: Secure the Plywood

Once everything looks good, secure the plywood to the brackets using screws.
Make sure the screws are tight enough to hold the plywood firmly in place, but don’t overdrill.
At this point, your bench should already feel like a real, usable seat.
Step 4: Finish the Wood

This is where it starts to feel beautiful.
Apply a coat of varnish or wood polish to the plywood. Use smooth, even strokes and let it dry properly.
You can do one or two coats depending on how rich you want the finish to look.
This step brings warmth into the space—it’s not just a bench anymore, it’s part of the room.
The Canopy Ceiling (The Element That Changed Everything)
If there’s one thing that truly transformed this space…
It’s this.
The canopy isn’t just a design feature—it changes how the space feels.
It pulls everything together, adds depth, and creates that soft, cozy glow that makes you want to stay.
Step 1: Create a Wooden Base on the Ceiling

Before installing anything, you need a strong base.
Mark your ceiling layout and drill wooden support strips into place. These act like the skeleton that will hold your canopy panels.
Take your time measuring here—this step determines how clean and aligned your final look will be.
Step 2: Cut and Prep the Plywood Panels

Measure your ceiling sections and cut the plywood panels accordingly.
Lay them out on the floor first to visualize how they’ll look once installed.
This step helps you catch any sizing issues before you go overhead.
Step 3: Apply Varnish or Polish

Before installing the panels, apply your wood finish.
It’s much easier to do this on the ground than overhead.
Let the panels dry completely—this ensures a clean, finished look once installed.
Step 4: Install the Ceiling Panels

Now comes the part where it all comes together.
Lift the panels and drill them into the wooden base you created earlier.
Work panel by panel, making sure everything aligns properly.
This step is easier with two people—one to hold, one to drill.
Step 5: Add LED Strip Lights

This is where the magic happens
Install LED strip lights along the edges or behind the panels to create that soft, hidden glow.
Turn them on… and you’ll instantly see the difference.
The light doesn’t just brighten the space—it softens it.
A Few Tips Before You Start
Here are a few things we learned along the way that made a big difference:
- Always measure twice (or three times) before drilling anything permanent
- Use a level for everything—especially brackets and ceiling panels
- Pre-finish wood whenever possible (it saves so much effort later)
- Work in sections for wallpaper to avoid glue drying too fast
- Get help for ceiling work—it’s doable solo, but much easier with two people
- Test your LED lights before installing to avoid rework
These little things will save you time, frustration, and a lot of “undoing.”
Where You Can Recreate This Look
This setup isn’t just for one corner—it’s actually super versatile.
You can recreate this in:
- A breakfast nook
- A small dining area
- An empty wall that needs purpose
- A cozy coffee corner
- Even a bedroom seating nook
Anywhere you want that “stay a little longer” feeling.

Why This Design Fits So Naturally Into U.S. Homes
One of the reasons this project feels so special… is because it fits so naturally into modern U.S. homes.
Most homes here have:
- Open layouts
- Empty wall spaces
- Functional rooms that sometimes feel… a little plain
This kind of build adds something that’s often missing—warmth and intention.
- The bench adds practical seating without taking up too much space
- The canopy draws the eye upward, making ceilings feel higher and more designed
- The lighting creates ambiance, not just brightness
And maybe most importantly…
It turns an ordinary corner into a space you actually want to use.
Not just pass by—but sit, pause, and stay.
