I had this old chest in espresso color which i got so bored seeing the old brown shades of furniture. Thought i need some makeover. We decided this was gonna go in the boys room, so we picked some grey shades and wanted to give a rustic touch.
All you need for this project
- Chalk paint for the chair( i got Graphite Annie Sloan chalkpaint)
- Wood stain of your choice
- pull Hardware
- Sand paper
- Cloth for applying stain
Step 1:
Sand the chest completely so that the dark stain is gone.
Step2:
Clean the chest thoroughly and apply the Minwax Red oak wood finish stain. Let the stain dry for about 8 hours.
Step3:
Then painted the furniture with Annie Sloan chalk paint Graphite color leaving the trims of the chest to show the stain color still. Also, I wanted the stain to show through here and there throughout the chest, so did not do multiple coats of chalk paint and left it with one coat.
Step4:
Then, finally coated the chest with clear wax.
I replaced the old hardware on the chest with new hardware which I found on Etsy and I loved the way it turned out.
How necessary it is to sand and stain the wood ? Can we skip these steps and apply the chalk paint directly ?
Chalk paint usually does not need sanding, but if the furniture piece has a lot of varnish then the paint might not adhere well, so light sanding would be better.
