DIY Indian Daybed (Diwaan)

We Indians have a very connection with Divans (day bed) in our homes. I think 80% of Indian homes would have a divan in the living room as it is convenient for extra seating or to relax down on a bed. But ya how many of you really miss good divans here in US. Either they are too expensive or they dont match the style we have at home.

So Here I am with a DIY Divan to add that personal touch to your homes and customize them to match your style may it be Indian, contemporary or may be mid century modern

Things you need:

  1. 2 x 4 x 8 lumber – 2qty
  2. 1 x 6 x 8 lumber – 3 qty
  3. table legs from home depot – 4
  4. a plywood sheet – you need one for sticking the frames on to,
I picked one from home depot and you can add one over the slats (optional).
  5. Chair rail moulding for border – got 2 of them from lowes
  6. Some pretty carved frames, check out my amazon list for some interesting pieces.

This is the rough sketch of the frame with measurements of the complete divan

Cut the lumbar based on the above measurements and start adding the pocket holes to screw in square shape.

Don’t have the frame picture, but first place the base frame and screw them using pocket holes.

Put the slats in between and screw in the slats as shown below.

Screw in the legs on four corners using pocket holes again.

These are some extra domes that I had added that I got from home depot.

I had a carved panel that I bought from world market, so I had added that to bring in some character on the front side of the frame.

This is how your frame should look with the legs screwed on the base frame. I just arranged the alignment of the frames to check how I want them to be placed.

Cut the plywood sheet as per your frame measurement and screw them to the base frame.

Apply wood glue on the plywood sheet and stick the frames and then screw in the frame through plywood so that you dont end breaking the frames.

This is how your frames should look once you have screwed them all.

I have added the raised stencil that I had used in my earlier project to add some character and bring in some ethnic touch.

Please check out RAISED STENCIL PROJECT FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON IT

Just love the raised stencil look on the front frame 🙂

Attached the crown moulding to give a complete look on all sides

Now is the time to paint it. So I wanted light pastel coral color, so had mixed annie sloan old white with BEHR coral to make it pastel coral.

Start painting it all over

And this is how it looks after 2 coats of the chalk paint.

Add the plywood sheet on the slats and added some dark wax for rustic look!! the divan is all set for the decor!!

Look how this beauty adorned my client’s home with this lovely dupion bedspread.
