Master Bedroom renovation series – Part 1
Have you ever had an idea that you couldn’t execute immediately but it stayed on the back of your mind? This was one of those ideas. Ever since we bought the house, I wanted to try an accent ceiling. We got tray ceiling done for our master bedroom with the thought I would add some accents. As they say, good things take their time, this one sure did – 6 years in ideation and about 2 weeks from start to finish, but it was totally and utterly worth the wait!
So, we started our master bedroom reno with beautiful pre-finished oak slats from Weaber Lumber. Not even a couple of slats in, we hit crooked walls. We ended up having to remove the panels, reorganize the slats and managed to get the first line in. From there it took us 2 weeks to get it finished. Busy schedules, summer break for the kids meant this project barely got a couple of hours a day, but we motored on.
The hard work paid off in the best possible way. These wooden slats not only added warmth to the space but doubled up as insulation and soundproofing. I am definitely here for accent ceilings.
Materials used:
- Weaber Lumber prefinished oak slats
- Brad nailer
- Laser Leveler
- Tape Measure
- Nails
- Liquid Nails
- Fan
How to DIY :
- Measure height and width of your ceiling using a tape measure
- Multiply the height and width and divide that number by 144 to give an idea of the area to cover. Tip: Add 5 – 10% as cutting waste.
- Make sure the surface is dry, clean and flat from any outlets or nails.
- Mark the center of the ceiling and get creative with the pattern. The possibilities of pattern are extensive and you can have as much fun as you want. You may also want to consider uneven walls and corners and how the pattern needs to be adjusted.
- Use the laser to level up the slats. Apply adhesive and nail it to the wall.
- You can use the spacer provided with the slats to space the slats. Check the level, placement and build up the ceiling one slat at a time.
