DIY Banaras crown for Ammavaru

It’s that time of year when we start planning for the Varalakshmi festivities. The excitement is in the air, and we’re all busy with detailed planning involving browsing through Pinterest for mood boards, imagining beautiful themes and decorations, planning the food menus, and shopping.

I feel Varalakshmi vratam brings women together in celebration like no other festival does. I particularly enjoy this festival as we all engage in some DIY activities. So, like every year, I’m sharing my DIY videos and to give you ideas for adorning your ammavaru (goddess) with beautiful decorations. I am starting with the crown, which is quick to make and requires easily available materials but looks stunning. If you’re interested in the purchasing the kit, you can find it in my Etsy store.

Materials used:

  • Dollartree cup
  • Banaras fabric
  • Hot Glue gun from Dollartree
  • Bun from Dollartree or from amazon
  • Small trims
  • Dancers side bun
  • Jewelry pieces to add to the crown

Step-by-step instructions :

  1. To create the crown, start by taking a cup from Dollar Tree and wrapping it with a vibrant-colored fabric. I personally used Banarasi fabric for this project. Use a hot glue gun to neatly secure the fabric in place.
  2. Next, take a scrunchie and a piece of the same fabric, and fashion them into a potli (a small drawstring pouch). Place the potli on top of the cup crown and carefully cut away any excess fabric.
  3. Now, glue the dancer’s side bun to the cup crown that you made earlier. Make sure to attach it securely with the hot glue gun.
  4. Add decorative trims and jewelry of your choice to decorate the crown. Use your imagination and creativity to reflect your personal style.
